Comprehensive Standard 3.4.13
For each major in a degree program, the institution assigns
responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum
development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field.
In those degree programs for which the institution does not identify a
major, this requirement applies to a curricular area or concentration.

Each degree program is coordinated by appropriate faculty. In some cases, an individual has been assigned with the primary
responsibility for coordinating review and assessment of a particular
curriculum. In other cases, an advisory committee [1] [2] [3]
has been established for that purpose. The table below shows the
coordinating mechanism and individuals charged with overall
coordination for each degree program, major and concentration.

Coordination by program faculty means that the degree program has a
subset of a department’s total full-time faculty whose primary
responsibility is to teach courses in the particular program. For each
program, one faculty member is assigned primary responsibility to lead
in the curriculum review and development process. Once program faculty consensus is reached,
curriculum changes are then considered by the entire departmental
faculty, who provide additional review and input. The department chair
submits changes or review documentation on behalf of the entire
department for further review and/or action. Curriculum creation [4] , deletion [5] , or modification [4] documents are sent through the appropriate dean to the Courses & Curricula Committee [6] , the Faculty Senate, the Provost, and finally to the Chancellor.
Coordination by departmental faculty means that the departmental
faculty, as a whole, provide for curriculum development and review
activities. Generally, this type of coordination is conducted when all
of the faculty in the department have major responsibilities for the
degree. Once the departmental faculty have completed their
deliberations, the flow of information follows the same general path as
described above.
Coordination by advisory committee is reserved for
multi-disciplinary programs with components that cut across two or more
colleges and/or departments. With the exception of the BGS degree, a
dean or deans is charged with chairing these advisory
committees. Dr. Jerry Sanson chairs the advisory committee for
BGS and reports directly to the Provost. For these
multidisciplinary degrees, curricular
action related to the degree would begin with the department of each
discipline represented by majors or areas of concentration in the
degree (or by all departments in which students may receive the degrees
for AA and AS). These departmental faculty then submit their
suggestions to the advisory committee. The advisory committees
are responsible for ensuring that curricular revisions suggested by any
of the departments involved in a given program are considered in terms
of the impact on the entire program. Actions from the advisory
commitee are
forwarded from the chair to the Courses & Curricula Committee and then to the
Faculty Senate, the Provost, and the Chancellor.
The individual charged with oversight for a particular degree, major or area of
concentration is in all cases a faculty member with appropriate credentials in the
discipline.
