Comprehensive Standard 3.5.1
The institution identifies competencies within the general education
core and provides evidence that graduates have attained those
college-level competencies.

LSUA associate degrees are required to include a minimum of 27 credit
hours of general education courses. LSUA bachelor degrees are required
to include a minimum of 39 credit hours of general education courses.
Details of the general education requirements are printed on pages
65-69 of the LSUA Catalog [1] . In addition
to the SACS criteria involving general education, LSUA must also comply
with the more stringent requirements of the Louisiana Board of Regents [2] ,
which require 27 and 39 hours, respectively, for associate and bachelor
degrees. Further, LSUA requires minimum hours in the following general
education categories: English Composition, Mathematics, Fine Arts,
Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. LSUA faculty have identified nine expected outcomes for the general education component of LSUA degrees. These are:
- The ability to read with comprehension at the college level.
- The ability to communicate effectively in writing.
- The ability to communicate effectively through speech.
- A basic competency in the use of computers.
- A basic understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts and the ability to apply these concepts to problem solving.
- A basic understanding of the scientific method and the ability to apply this method to natural phenomena.
- The ability to analyze and synthesize information logically.
- An appreciation and an awareness of the value of one's own and other cultures.
- An understanding that education and personal development are life-long pursuits.
These outcomes are published on page 65 of the LSUA Catalog [1] .
The courses that may be utilized to satisfy the general education core
are designed to address these nine general education outcomes. The
General Education Assessment Committee [3]
is a standing administrative committee of the University. The Committee
is chaired by the Provost and consists of faculty representatives from
all academic departments and the Library. The General Education
Assessment Committee (GEAC) is charged with developing specific
assessment criteria and methods for each of the nine general education
learning outcomes. Additionally, GEAC conducts the Graduate Exit Exam
(GEE) each fall and spring semester. The GEE includes standardized
tests (ACT CAAP), locally-developed tests, and opportunities for formal
and informal speaking. All program graduates are required to take this
exam and the results are used by the GEAC to determine how well
graduates have met the desired learning outcomes. The results are also
provided to the academic departments, with request for specific
scrutiny and action on those areas where graduate achievement on the
GEE was less than desired. Results are formally reported on Annual
Assessment Forms [4] as part of LSUA’s
normal institutional effectiveness process. Additionally, results are
made available to the entire campus community in the Annual Assessment
Report Card [5] .
As discussed in Core Requirement 2.12, the General Education
Assessment Committee is, as part of the QEP, undertaking a thorough
review of the competencies of general education. Revised competencies,
reflecting both assessment results and mandates from the Board of
Regents, have been proposed to the Courses and Curriculum Committee.
GEAC will continue to work on possible additional revisions to the
competencies to reflect the definition of an educated person developed
as part of the QEP. GEAC has also proposed a process for a
thorough review of the list of general education courses and is
re-examining the methods of assessment for General Education to
determine whether changes in assessment are necessary and appropriate.
