LSU at Alexandria strives to provide a safe and healthful working and
learning environment for its students, faculty, staff and visitors.
These efforts involve several administrative offices, academic
departments, and university committees, and are reflected in a large
number of policies, services, and programs. Information about services,
programs, and policies is widely available. The LSUA Safety Handbook [1]
contains safety rules for the campus and guidelines for dealing with various types of emergencies. It is available on the LSUA website.
More detailed, subject-specific information is available in the
University Occupational and Environmental Safety Program Manual [2]
, also available on the LSUA website. Pertinent policies include the University Occupational and Environmental Safety Policy [3]
, Policy Statement 214 [4]
(Environmental Health and Cleanliness in Teaching Facilities), Policy Statement 224 [5]
(Sexual Harassment), Policy Statement 227 [6]
(Illegal Use of Drugs or Alcohol), Policy Statement 228 [7]
(Code of Student Conduct), and Policy Statement 247 [8]
(Sexual Assault). All policy statements are available on the LSUA website.
The LSUA Safety Committee [9]
provides
oversight of the health and safety programs for LSUA. This committee
consists of representatives from faculty and staff and meets each
semester to review safety policies and items of special concern.
Improvements to lighting [10]
on the
campus grounds have been made recently and continue to be made in
response to requests from students and employees. Students perceive
LSUA to be a safe environment as indicated by responses on the ACT
Student Opinion Survey [11]
for the past few years.
LSUA Emergency Response Procedures [12]
are posted campus-wide and on the LSUA website.
Emergency Response Teams, including Registered Nurses, report to all
accidents. First Aid kits are located in each building and a
comprehensive First Aid Room is located near the Nursing department in
Coughlin Hall.
The campus is actively patrolled by two LSUA Police Officers who are
POST certified and a security guard. Additional patrols are provided by
the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Officers. Crime statistics are published
in the Student Handbook [13]
and on the LSUA website. These statistics show that little crime occurs on the LSUA campus. On annual satisfaction surveys, LSUA students [14]
, faculty [15]
and staff [16]
indicate a high degree of satisfaction with the services of University Police.
Safety articles [17]
are distributed to all LSUA staff and faculty quarterly and receipt confirmed. Monthly safety meetings [18]
are held for staff in the Facilities Services department. Safety
training is available for Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure, Sexual
Harassment, Hazardous Waste Management, Driver Safety, Radiation
Safety, Wastewater Treatment, and Boiler Machinery Safety.
The University maintains an excellent working relationship with all
federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, state and local
fire and emergency services organizations, as well as state and local
Emergency Preparedness offices. LSUA works in conjunction with
Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Emergency
operations plans [19]
are documented and activated as local or national emergencies require. In addition, the State of Louisiana audits [20]
the safety operations of the University annually. This audit, the
safety training, the active security patrols, and emergency
preparedness ensure LSU at Alexandria takes reasonable steps to provide
a healthy, safe, and secure environment.
